When James B. Clarke laid out his new town site that he called Ponchatoula in 1854, he and his survey crew measured from the center of the railroad tracks in the center of the development. The railroad tracks did not run exactly north to south, but he laid out the town to match the angle reflected in the orientation of the tracks.
