The Green Wave football team picked up a massive win at home against the Covington Lions, winning dominantly, 31-12. The Green Wave defense started strong with two blocked punts in the first quarter alone. The second block set up the game’s first points for Ponchatoula, as Jace Jackson ran it in for a sixyard touchdown and a successful two-point conversion to give the Wave the lead, 8-0. The score stayed that way through the first half, as Ponchatoula got a critical sack on 4th down to prevent Covington from scoring late in the 2nd quarter. During the second half, Ponchatoula’s first drive started with a bang. Bishop Davis threw a laser to Brayden Perrin for a 54yard touchdown with another successful two-point conversion to extend the Green Wave lead to 16-0. The Lions responded with a 68-yard passing touchdown of their own but failed the two-point conversion to keep the score at 16-6. Ponchatoula picked up another score with seven minutes left in the 3rd quarter with a three-yard rushing touchdown from Bishop Davis with yet another successful two-point conversion, extending the lead to 24-6. Covington ended the 3rd quarter with a QB sneak to end the 3rd quarter, 24-12. Bishop Davis added another rushing touchdown, a 36-yard rush and his second of the game, to secure the victory for the Green Wave, 31-12.
The Lady Wave Volleyball team had a great week, going 2-0 at home. The girls defeated St. Scholastica on Tuesday in five sets and defeated Central on Thursday in four sets. The girls currently sit at 8-6 on the season. This week, the Lady Wave play Denham Springs at home on Tuesday and play at Hammond on Thursday.
Fall youth baseball at PARD starts this week for ages 7-18. The season will last from September 26 until the last week of October.
In college football, Southeastern dropped its 4th straight game, losing their home football opener to Houston Christian, 34-19. The Lions now sit at 0-4 on the season, still seeking their first win. They will play Tarleton State at home this Saturday at 3:00 (ESPN+). Tulane earned a strong win against Nicholls at home, 36-7, with the return of Michael Pratt. The Green Wave are now 3-1 on the season and will play UAB next at home this Saturday at 11:00 am on ESPN2. LSU won a nail-biter at home against Arkansas in their SEC home opener. The Boot is back in Baton Rouge as the Tigers held on for a 37-34 win in Death Valley against the Razorbacks with a game-winning chip shot field goal. Jayden Daniels finished 20-29 with 320 passing yards, four touchdowns, and 36 rushing yards. Brian Thomas Jr. and Malik Nabers were the breakout stars of the game, with two receiving touchdowns each. Thomas finished with five receptions for 133 yards. Nabers grabbed eight receptions for 130 yards. The Tigers travel to Oxford this weekend for their toughest test of the season yet against a high-flying Ole Miss offense. That game will kick off at 5:00pm on Saturday (ESPN).
The Saints lost heartbreakingly, 18-17, in Green Bay. After the Saints were up 17-0, three quarters in, Derek Carr was sacked in the 4th quarter and did not return, due to a shoulder injury. After that, the Saints struggled to recover with Jameis Winston and allowed the Packers to repeatedly score with little effort. The Saints were in position to take the lead with a minute left, but Blake Grupe missed the goahead, 46-yard field goal, giving the Packers the win, 18-17. The Saints now sit at 2-1 on the season and travel back home this weekend to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a divisional rival game on Sunday. Kickoff is at noon (FOX).
