With one month remaining before the primary election, campaign finance reports were due from all candidates in Louisiana elections by September 14, 2023. The Louisiana State Board of Ethics, Office of Campaign Finance, requires candidates for all Major and District offices to electronically file full campaign finance reports via their portal by the mandatory deadline. According to the Campaign Finance Office, all candidates included in this article are candidates for District offices.
Per Title 18: Louisiana Election Code, Article 1482, Statement of Purpose: “The legislature recognizes that the effectiveness of representative government is dependent upon a knowledgeable electorate and the confidence of the electorate in their elected public officials. The legislature, therefore, enacts this Chapter to provide public disclosure of the financing of election campaigns and to regulate certain campaign practices.”
Candidates who fail to meet the state’s mandatory deadline will receive notice from the Office of Campaign Finance via postal mail of the delinquency and an according daily penalty of fifty dollars until the report is filed, up to a maximum penalty of $2,000. Candidates may use campaign funds to pay the fine.
