TOWN OF AMITE CITY COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
January 6, 2026
The Mayor and City Council of the Town of Amite City, Louisiana came together in regular session on the sixth day of January 2026 at 6:00 p.m. in the meeting room of City Hall, 212 E. Oak St., Amite, LA 70422.
Declaration
City Clerk Jewel McCoy read the public input statement.
Mayor Walter Daniels III called the council meeting to order and asked McCoy for roll call.

Richardson offered the opening prayer followed by Daniels leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

A motion was made by Sumrall, seconded by Core to approve the following minutes:
December 2, 2025 - Regular Council Meeting
December 11, 2025 - Special Council Meeting
Motion passed with no objection.
Financial Statements
A motion was made by Sumrall, seconded by Richardson to approve the following financial statements:
Budget to Actual – November 30, 2025
Cash Disbursements - November 30, 2025

Mayor Walter Daniels III
A motion was made by Sumrall, seconded by Core to table the Planning and Zoning Board’s recommendation to subdivide property #270903 on Camile Street from seven twenty-five-foot lots to three fifty-eight-foot lots.
Motion passed with no objection.
A motion was made by Richardson to introduce Ordinance No. 01-2026 – An ordinance establishing a 2 1/2% annual raise for the city clerk. Core stated that she wanted this ordinance tabled until the financial state of the town could be reviewed due to the auditors’ recent report. Attorney Stevens stated that the introduction of the ordinance had already been done by Richardson and it could not be tabled at this meeting. Discussions concerning the ordinance should be made at the next meeting when it is scheduled for vote. Public hearing and vote will be held February 2, 2026.
A motion was made by Richardson to introduce Ordinance No. 02-2026 – An ordinance to change the mayor of the Town of Amite City position to a full-time position working a minimum of 35 hours a week. Public hearing and vote will be held February 2,2026.
A motion was made by Richardson, seconded by Coleman to approve the alcoholic beverage permit for LK’s Amite Shell LLC located at 100 West Oak Street. A roll call vote was taken as follows:
YEAS: Coleman, Core, Richardson, Sumrall
NAYS: None, ABSTAIN: None, ABSENT: Guzzardo

Council Member Shirley Core
Update on Daniel St. bridge: Attorney Stevens stated he spoke to the contact person concerning the Daniel St. bridge and was told that the work should begin by January 19th and the rest of the settlement agreement should be forthcoming soon. Hopefully, everything will be completed by the February meeting.
Update on fire hydrants: Kolwe stated we are working on two grants to help with fire hydrants. We have been approved to proceed with the $35,000.00 grant and will start immediately purchasing items. We are still waiting for approval of the other grant.
Update on pole lights out in the city: Kolwe stated there is a process for submitting lights out to Entergy through the front office at city hall. Also, the town will add the procedure to the town’s website so anyone who has an Entergy account can submit a light-out notice.
Council Member Roseline “Rose” Sumrall
Police: Assistant Chief Graham stated everything was good.
Fire: Assistant Chief Pardue also stated everything was good.
Sumrall stated that Frank Thompson wanted the council to know there will be a flag raising ceremony starting at Amite City Hall to kick off Oyster Festival month. This will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 5 p.m.
A motion was made by Richardson, seconded by Coleman to adjourn the meeting. Meeting adjourned.
