Dominican Sister of Peace,

Sister June Engelbrecht

Dominican Sister of Peace, Sister June Engelbrecht, died at Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH, on January 25, 2025. She was born in 1940 in New Orleans, LA, and in 1959 entered the St. Mary New Orleans Dominican Sisters, now the Dominican Sisters of Peace.

Sr. June earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in biology and secondary education from St. Mary’s Dominican College, a Master of Arts Degree in Religious Studies from Providence College, and a Master of Divinity from Immaculate Conception Seminary. She also completed a Clinical Pastoral Education program from St. Raphael in New Haven. She taught in elementary and high schools in New Orleans, was a pastoral minister in Louisiana, and a staff member at Rosaryville Spirit Life Center. She was a Chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator for North Oaks Hospice.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Alma Patterson Engelbrecht, and her brother, Reverend Henry Engelbrecht. She is survived by several cousins.

A Vigil of Remembrance Service was held on February 3, 2025, at 4:45pm at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel, Columbus, Ohio.

The funeral liturgy will be held at Holy Ghost Church in Hammond on February 21, 2025, at 12:00 pm with visitation beginning at 11.00am burial at Rosaryville Cemetery in Ponchatoula. Arrangements were made by Egan-Ryan Funeral Home.

Eleanor V. Petho; 93; Independence; February 11; survived by her children, Andy Petho, Russell Petho, Rudolph Petho (Brenda), Denise Toole, and Eric Petho; six grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Maxie Lou Bennett; 91; Ponchatoula; February 6; survived by her close friend, Keri Wickham, and many residents/ staff at Ponchatoula Community Care, who became her “family” since 2018.

Martha Ann Sharkey Payne; 74; Amite; February 8; survived by her husband, Marshall Payne; daughters, Faith Luna (Marty) and Leah Payne; five grandkids, Emily Kleinpeter (Hunter), Brennan Davis, Rylie Clement (Andrew), Jake Davis, and Asher Tabor; and one beautiful great-granddaughter, Kennedy Kleinpeter.

Jeannette Collette Mitchell McMillan; 89; Kentwood; February 8; survived by her two sons, Wayne Mitchell (Denise) and Mark Mitchell (Michael); grandchildren, Dustin (Katie), Dane (Brandi), Derek (Lauren); great-grandchildren, Camille, Claire, Kylie, Carver, Kambry, Madison, and Landon Mitchell; special friend and caregiver, Pat Felker; and many nieces and nephews.

Bobby Ray McCoy; 78; Denham Springs; February 11; survived by his high school sweetheart and wife, Margaret Ann McCoy; sons, David (Renee), Derek (Shirley), and Robbie McCoy; grandchildren, Madeline, Patrick, and Evangeline McCoy; sister, Becky McCoy Decker (Carl); niece, Kerri Decker; nephew, Ryan Decker; and great-niece, Aurora Guzman-Decker.

Curtis Lee Hinton Jr.; 68; Independence; February 12; survived by his wife, Rita Hinton; daughters, Mary Cruz (Carlos), Kelly Hinton (Brad), Jessica Forsythe, and Deborah Hinton; son, Curtis Hinton, III; sisters, Sarah and Judith; brother, Rusty; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rhonda Gainey Phillips; 60; Ponchatoula; February 6; survived by her daughters, Ame Lee and Danielle Phillips and her wife Hammy; beloved feline companion, Miss Spicy; grand-dogs, Toby and Rosie; brothers and sisters-in-law, Glenn Dale and Sharon Methvin and Donnie and Debby Methvin; and sister, Brenda Gainey.
