Sidney Elmore Barnes
Sidney Elmore Barnes, 84, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at his residence of over 50 years, surrounded by his loving family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. Sidney grew up a typical boy in Ponchatoula, squirrel hunting and fishing with his friends with widely known nicknames such as “Ponchatoula Slim,” “Loopty,” or “High Pockets,” to name a few. Sidney proudly served his country in the US Air Force. He retired as a Foreman from Shell Oil Refinery in Norco with approximately 30 years of dedicated service. Often quiet, soft-spoken, and laid back, he was always friendly, giving, and willing to help anyone who needed it. He enjoyed being outdoors; whether working in the yard, cutting his grass, working on his backhoe, picking pecans, or woodworking, he kept himself busy. He was always there to root for his teams when the New Orleans Saints and LSU Football games were on. Sidney had a sense of humor and a smile that could light up any room he entered, a smile that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his adoring wife of 49 years, Diane Barnes; children, Cheri Barnes Basford (Rob) and Christopher “Brandon” Barnes (Jennifer); grandchildren, Aubree and Brooks; sister-in-law, Marsha Barnes; nephews, Bill Barnes (Rosamond), Frank Barnes (Vickie), and Dean Barnes (Rhonda); niece, Misty Barnes; numerous cousins, great and great-great nieces and nephews; and his grand-pup Raven who adored him.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Birley Barnes and Irene Jones Barnes; in-laws, Joseph Fontenot and Verlie Eliser Fontenot; baby brother, B.A. Barnes; brother, Frank “Glen” Barnes; nephew, Gene Barnes; precious granddaughters, Addisyn and Brynlee; numerous aunts and uncles; and his beloved pup, Maggie.
